The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial centers on the court-marshal of a young lieutenant who commandeered the U.S.S. Caine during a typhoon in World War II. In order to get the lieutenant out of the charges, his lawyer must prove that the ship's commander was mentally incapable of leading his men or controlling the ship.
The show first opened on Broadway at the Plymouth Theatre in 1954 with John Hodiak as the young lieutenant, Henry Fonda has his defense lawyer and Lloyd Nolan as Commander Philip Francis Queeg. It was revived in 1983 at the Circle in the Square Theatre in a production that lasted 216 performances. The title is also known from the 1954 film The Caine Mutiny which starred Humphrey Bogart, José Ferrer and Van Johnson.
